USA Taekwondo CEO Bruce Harris announced Friday the hiring of Mr. Patrick Wentland as the new High Performance Director for USA Taekwondo. Wentland has served as a personal coach of Olympic Champion Apolo Ohno during his tenure as the U.S. Speed Skating National Team Head Coach and Program Director (1994-99) and was a two-time U.S. Speed Skating World Team member (1987, 1992).

He also served as President of the International Speed Skating Academy from 2002-2004.

"It is my belief that Mr. Wentland brings strong background in Olympic sport to our organization, having trained to become a world-class athlete, and also having worked to train very successful Olympic athletes,” USA Taekwondo CEO Bruce Harris said. “These are all attributes that he can draw on to help make USA Taekwondo athletes more competitive in trying to reach their goal of standing tall on the Olympic podium.”

Wentland, who most recently functioned as the Technical Director at the Academy for Speedskating Excellence, received his undergraduate degree in business management from Northeastern University in Boston.

“The decision to select Mr. Wentland was a difficult one, given that there were three excellent final candidates under consideration,” Harris said. “Either of those final candidates would have been, in my opinion, an excellent choice to help us to develop our High Performance Program. Mr. Wentland has no experience with taekwondo, but he does bring a wealth of experience in developing programs to help athletes to become elite Olympic athletes. He will be a most welcome addition to our USA Taekwondo staff.”
