During the 2012 World Poomsae Championships, the United States medaled in two Free Style Poomsae divisions, and with that performance instantly became one of the leading Free Style Poomsae teams in the world.

Although Free Style Poomsae is still very new at the WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships (and with that newness comes some challenges), we feel that for 2013, the U.S. National Poomsae Team can build on our past success and improve in this dynamic and exciting competition.

Development initiatives in 2013 started with the first ever USA-Taekwondo Free Style Poomsae Seminar (conducted at the U.S. Open in February), and will continue with a fair and athlete-focused selection procedure for the 2013 Free Style Poomsae team members. Additional athlete development in the form of training camps prior to the 2013 World Poomsae Championships will give our athletes the preparation necessary for optimal performance.

In order to conduct a selection that is fair to all athletes, the 2013 U.S. National Poomsae Team Free Style members will be selected using a three-phase process:

1) Video Submission

Eligible athletes may submit a video of their Free Style Poomsae Performance. All video submissions will be reviewed by U.S. National Poomsae Team coaches and USA-Taekwondo Poomsae Referees. The submission deadline is June 1, 2013. All submissions that meet the free style technical guidelines will advance to the second phase.

2) Free Style Finalist Selection

The top four video performances (picked by the referees and coaches) per division will advance to the final phase.

3) Free Style Poomsae Team Selection Camp

On July 8, 2013 in Chicago, IL, a selection camp will be conducted by the U.S. National Poomsae Team coaching staff. During this camp, athletes who qualified through phase 1 (video submission) will be evaluated and the Free Style Poomsae team members will be selected.

We feel that this selection process is the best method for the U.S. National Poomsae Team this year, and will result in further athlete development as well as the best athletes representing the United States at the 2013 WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

In order to be fair to all athletes, any coach or referee who is affiliated by club with any of the athletes who apply to the video submission phase or participate in the selection camp shall excuse themselves from the entire selection process. It is our goal to avoid even the appearance of any bias whatsoever in the selection process, and the only way to do that is to ensure that all parties involved in the selection are unaffiliated with the athletes they are evaluating.
