Sixteen-member U.S. National Team decided at 2013 USAT National Team Trials
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 13, 2013 – Sixteen athletes earned spots on the 2013 USAT National Team after winning their respective weight classes at the 2013 USAT National Team Trials Jan. 12-13 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The 2013 USA Taekwondo National Team members are: fin weights Gregory English (Chicago, Ill.) and Giuliana Gil (Camarillo, Calif.); fly weights Charlotte Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and James Howe III (San Ramon, Calif.); bantam weights Olie Burton (Accokeek, Md.) and Cheyenne Lewis (Elk Grove, Calif.); feather weights Terrence Jennings (Alexandria, Va.) and Nicole Palma (Lake Worth, Fla.); light weights Diana Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mark Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas); welter weights Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) and Paige McPherson (Sturgis, S.D.); middle weights Lauren Hamon (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Jason Neville (Edmond, Okla.); and heavy weights La Shondra Rawls (Clinton, Md.) and Abel Valdivia (Miami, Fla.).
Six Olympians headlined the competition field, including 2012 Olympic bronze medalists Jennings and McPherson. Four-time Olympian and three-time Olympic medalist, Steven Lopez earned his 20th consecutive Senior National Team. He was once again joined on the National Team by younger siblings, 2008 bronze medalist Diana Lopez, and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Mark Lopez. Craig earned her fifth National Team spot, which includes the 2008 Olympic Team.
The 16-member team earned the right to compete at the 2013 World Taekwondo Championships held in Puebla, Mexico, July 15-21.
