National Team Trials Handbook

Below is an important update regarding the 2009 National Team Trial/Fight-Off.

Please note the registration and weight division declaration deadline is March 27, 2009. All athletes must be registered via the Hang-a-star system by this date in order to be eligible for the Team Trial.  Athletes will NOT be allowed to change weight divisions after the March 27, 2009 deadline.

Registration will be available on Monday, March 16 at the latest.

Dear Athletes and Coaches,

We know you are all anxiously awaiting the announcement of which weight divisions will be used for the National Team Trial/Fight-Off in April. We understand the timeliness and importance of this announcement and thank you for your patience.

On February 18, 2009, the WTF posted a story that the new rule amendments were passed.  Since that posting, there have been many discussions regarding whether or not the new weight categories would actually go into effect for the 2009 World Championships.  Because of these discussions we have been hesitant to make an announcement regarding the weight divisions.  We did not want to make a decision and then have the WTF change their minds making it more difficult on athletes. That being said, we are currently six weeks away and the USA Taekwondo Staff and the Athlete Advisory Council have decided to go with what the WTF has currently placed in writing.

As of today, our plan is to use the new weight divisions. The only way this will change is if the WTF makes an announcement in writing that the old weight divisions will be used for World Championships.

As announced previously, USAT Staff and the USAT AAC have determined the following will be the procedure changes regarding weight divisions for the 2009 National Team Trial/Fight-Off:

  • 1. All qualified athletes will have the opportunity to select the weight category in which they will participate in the 2009 National Team Trial/Fight-Off (April 24, 2009). All qualified athletes will be afforded the opportunity to move up or down or remain in the same division from their qualified or declared category.
  • a. All athletes will be required to declare a division by March 27th. This date will also be the event registration deadline. While two weeks is short in time the feeling from athletes and coaches is they would rather have less time to register and declare and more time to prepare for the athletes who are in their division versus the opposite.

  • 2. Once athletes declare, all divisions with 6 or less athletes will remain the original round robin/fight-off format that was presented in the original selection procedures. Divisions that have 7 or more athletes will be switched to a blind draw double elimination tournament format with no seeding.

Again, we appreciate your patience and assure you we are doing our very best to stay updated on the current status of this announcement.

Should any of this change we will make immediate announcements by email and on our website.  You have the responsibility as an athlete and coach to continually check for updates.
