Mar 07 Austin to Host USA Taekwondo National Championships & Junior Olympics June 30-July 5

Flying feet and piercing screams will be in abundance at the Austin (Texas) Convention Center next week as USA Taekwondo conducts its 2009 U.S. National Championship, Junior Olympic Championship, and U.S. National Poomsae Team Trials events June 30-July 5. Over 2,000 athletes ages 6-72, aided by over 550 coaches, will compete during the week. 

In addition to vying for the title of "national champion" in their respective weight divisions, the 14-17 year-old junior sparring athletes will also be competing for spots in the 2009 Junior National Team Trial/Fight-Off. A team trials to select the U.S. National Poomsae Team will also be held during the week. 

The Senior National Championships (July 4-5) includes forms, sparring, weapons and board breaking events for athletes 14 years of age and older. The Junior Olympic Championships, held June 30-July 3, features Olympic-type sparring competition in both the Grassroot Division and the World Class Division, as well as competition in forms, weapons and board breaking. 

The semifinalists in each of the ten 14-17 year-old World Class sparring weight divisions will advance to the Junior National Team Trial/Fight-Off, August 22-23 in Colorado Springs.

Tickets are available at the door any day of the event. Prices are:

Single-day - $15 for adults and $10 for seniors (60+) and children (6-10)

Three-day - $40 for adults and $20 for seniors (60+) and children (6-10)

Four-day - $50 for adults and $30 for seniors (60 +) and children (6-10)

Senior Nationals Package (July 4-5 only) - $25 for adults and $15 for seniors (60+) and children (6-10)

CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS OF AGE ARE ADMITTED FREE EVERY DAY 

Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. each day. The rundown of events for the week is as follows:

10-11 Year-Old Forms, Grassroot Sparring, Board Breaking, Weapons and World Class Sparring

Wednesday, July 1
6-7 & 8-9 Year-Old Forms, Grassroot Sparring, Board Breaking, Weapons and 8-9 Year-Old World Class Sparring

Thursday, July 2
12-13 & 14-17 Year-Old Forms, Grassroot Sparring, Board Breaking, Weapons, 12-13 Year-Old World Class Sparring and Additional Competition Poomsae Qualifier

Friday, July 3
14-17 Year-Old World Class Sparring and Adult & Masters U.S. National Poomsae Team Trials

Saturday, July 4
18-32 Year-Old Forms, Weapons and Board Breaking; 33 Year-Old and Older Forms, Sparring, Weapons and Board Breaking; and Junior U.S. National Poomsae Team Trials

Sunday, July 5
18-32 Year-Old Grassroot and World Class Sparring
