2009 U.S. Open Granted G-2 Rating by WTF

Jan. 21, 2009, 5:02 p.m. (ET)

As part of its World Ranking system which came into effect on January 1, 2009, the World Taekwondo Federation has announced the ranking grades of the WTF events for 2009.

The upcoming 2009 U.S. Open, held Feb. 12-15 in Las Vegas, Nev., received the only G-2 rating among the international opens on the 2009 calendar. All other international opens were rated G-1.

"We have been working for some time with the WTF to help develop a worldwide athlete point ranking system," said USA Taekwondo CEO David Askinas. "This will be utilized to determine seeding at important WTF events. International Opens will be an integral part of the system and WTF has recognized the U.S. Open by granting immediate AA G-2 status to this prestigious world class event. We are the only WTF sanctioned Open recognized in this category. We hope to demonstrate to the WTF that the Open is worthy of AAA G3 status for 2010. This will be the first event ever in which an athlete can gain ranking points and we are honored to have that privilege. This year's event is already attracting some of the best teams and athletes in the world and we will have a number of Olympians and many different national teams on hand competing in Las Vegas. If you are an international taekwondo athlete you do not want to miss the 2009 US Open. Register Here.
