Jr. World Championship Team Trials Open Qualifier This Weekend

Over 175 athletes, age 13-16, will take part in this weekend's Junior World Championships Team Trials Open Qualifier at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The event will take place in Sports Center I, with the top four finishers in each of the 16 weight divisions (8 male, 8 female) advancing to the 2010 Junior World Championships Team Trials/Fight-Off on January 9-10, which will also be held at the Olympic Training Center. 

Saturday's schedule features competition in the male fin, fly, bantam, feather and lightweight divisions, and the female welter, light middle, middle, light heavy and heavyweight divisions. 

Sunday's action will feature the male welter, light middle, middle, light heavy and heavyweight divisions, and the female fin, fly, bantam, feather and lightweight divisions. 

The field of athletes includes eight members of the 2009 U.S. Junior National Team, two members of the 2009 U.S. Senior National Team, and two members of the 2009 U.S. National Poomsae Team. 

The Junior Team members are fresh off their performance at last month's Junior Pan American Championships in El Salvador, where they won 15 medals. Junior Pan Am gold medalists Nicole Palma (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Giuliana Gil (Pasadena, Calif.), silver medalist Adrienne Ivey (Ashburn, Va.), and bronze medalists Seth Wolfe (Miami, Fla.), Emmanuel Fountain (Norfolk, Va.) and Taylor Brennan (Hilliard, Ohio) will be competing along with fellow Junior National Team members Haley Kong (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Matthew Kim (Ramsey, N.J.). 

Also in the mix will be U.S. Senior National Team members Victoria Stambaugh (Pasadena, Texas) and Talina Le (Woodinville, Wash.), and U.S. National Poomsae Team members Maisey Calinog (Granada Hills, Calif.) and Madison Motoyasu (Santa Clarita, Calif.). 

Other notables include male flyweights Justin Bretz (Hilliard, Ohio) and Lyles Moore (Miami, Fla.), male featherweight Blaise Castagnetti (Mililani, Hawaii), male welterweights Khalil Lee-Butler (Seattle, Wash.) and Steven Thompson (Westland, Mich.), male light middleweight Tanner Creel (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), female finweight Kymberly Buset (Henderson, Nev.), female flyweight Stephanie Popken (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), female bantamweights Jessica Junio (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Talitha McCormick (St. Louis, Mo.) and Caitlin VanDrisse (Maple Grove, Minn.), female lightweight Kiana Lo (Danville, Calif.), female welterweight Yasmine Bomagat (Brentwood, Calif.), female middleweight Merissa Pico (Fort Lee, N.J.), female light heavyweights Alyssa Kujiraoka (San Mateo, Calif.) and Dess Vincecruz (Frederick, Md.), and female heavyweight Kyla Millington (Coon Rapids, Minn.). 

Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. each day in Sports Center I. Tickets can be purchased at the door and daily admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors (65+) and children (10 & under). USOC & NGB employees, as well as resident athletes, are admitted free with their ID. Children under the age of 4 are also admitted free of charge.
