Preview of USAT Competitions for 2009

Although the Senior National Team selection process and events for 2009 were recently posted online, USA Taekwondo has not yet finalized the 2010 process.  However, it is important for athletes to note that the 2009 qualifiers, whether regional or state leading up to and including Senior Nationals in Austin, will be an integral part of the 2010 Senior National Team selection process.  It will be proposed that the top 4 finishers from Austin will compete in a team trial or a team selection camp in January 2010 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs together with athletes receiving performance waivers such as the 2009 National Team members.  The Olympic qualification system is currently being formulated and discussed and member input will be solicited in the near future.  World Championship and possibly other major international competition results will surely play a part in USAT's selection of weight categories for the 2012 Olympics, so it is obviously important for our aspiring Olympians to be fully engaged in the 2009 and 2010 Senior Team Qualification process.  The World Taekwondo Federation has not released a competition schedule for 2010 but it appears likely there will be some major WTF international event held in 2010.

On the Junior side this year's team will be selected after the top finishers from the Junior Olympics in Austin fight off at a team trial in August at the Olympic Training Center.  That team will compete in the PATU Junior Championships in Curacao in the fall of 2009.  Depending upon the dates of the Junior Worlds scheduled in 2010 in Tijuana, Mexico, USAT may have to hold a Junior Open Black Belt tournament in January 2010 at the OTC leading up to a team trials in the spring much like we did in 2008.  Junior Worlds are usually staged in May so there is a need to choose a team prior to Junior Olympics.  Like this year, there will be a separate international event for the Junior Team selected at 2010 Junior Olympics.
