TAEKWONDO: Competition Runs Late and is Postponed at Opening Day of 7th World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Izmir, Turkey

Competition at the opening day of the 7th World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Izmir, Turkey, was postponed when the event ran late into the evening. Female bantamweight Merissa Pico (Fort Lee, N.Y.) was the only American fighter left in the first day of competition. Pico had reached the quarterfinal round with wins over Germany and Hungary. Male featherweight Jensen Ishida (Waikele, Hawaii), female featherweight Victoria Stambaugh (Pasadena, Texas) and male bantamweight Aaron Porras (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) were all eliminated in the early rounds of Wednesday's competition. The event will pick up where it left off on Thursday morning with the conclusion of the men's and women's bantamweight and featherweight divisions. Action will also begin for the finweight and flyweight divisions on Thursday. The event runs from May 7-11 and includes 749 athletes from a record 84 countries. ###
