USA Taekwondo Announces Selection Procedures for New U-24 Team & 2009 Junior National Team

Dec. 18, 2008, 1:58 p.m. (ET)

USA Taekwondo is excited to announce the launch of a new U.S. National Team in 2009.  Athletes ages 18-23 will have the opportunity to compete for this developmental team called the U-24 U.S. National Team.

The plan for this team is to attend at least one major international open event each year in anticipation that athletes will gain competitive international experience and perform at a higher level once they reach the full U.S. National Team. We believe this is a great opportunity for athletes who have aged out of the Junior National Team but have not quite reached the full U.S. National Team.

"In the recent past there have been many talented athletes that have fallen out of the developmental pipeline," said U.S. National Team Coach Juan Moreno. "This is a great opportunity to ensure these athletes good international experience to foster future success at major international competitions such as the World Championships and Olympic Games."

USA Taekwondo is planning to take the 2009 U-24 U.S. National Team to the Korea Open International Taekwondo Championships in late 2009. Click here for the full selection procedures.

The 2009 Junior National Team Procedures have also been announced. The 2009 Junior National Team will attend the Junior Pan American Taekwondo Championships in Curacao. In 2007, the Junior National Team won 17 medals, including 11 Gold, at the Junior Pan American Championships.

Trial dates for both events will be announced once the Pan American Taekwondo Union finalizes its competition dates for the 2009 Junior Pan American Taekwondo Championships. It is anticipated that the U-24 U.S. National Team Trial and the final Junior National Team Trial will be held over one weekend. Dates will be announced as soon as possible.
