More promising results for the 2017 SuperMicro US National Championship Finalist Nikhil Kumar as the 14 year old made an impressive run in the Cadet Boys Singles event at the 2017 Hang Seng Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open. Following on from a successful team campaign where he won gold along with teammates Michael Tran and Alan Chen, Kumar was focused and ready to go for the singles.

In the first round he reversed the result from the team competition, coming up against Baldwin Chan of Hong Kong, a player who had accounted for both Tran and Kumar in their team group stage to give Hong Kong C the win over USA. On this occasion he was able to comfortably win 3-0 and advance over the first hurdle in the draw. In his next match he would be pushed closely by Kwan To Yiu of Hong Kong. The match went the full 5 games after a tight 11-9 win in the 4th for Yiu tied the match up. In the 5th it was Kumar who asserted control and closed out 11-5 to advance to the quarterfinal stage.

In the quarterfinals he accounted for 2nd seed Yew En Koen Pang from Singapore in 4 games, currently ranked 32 in the world for under 15. Into the semifinals and Nikhil made another strong push closer to victory with a straight games win over Chun Kit Lau in front of his home support. The display set Kumar up with an appearance in the final where he would play Portgual's Tiago Li - another player who had upset the odds in similar style to reach the final, ranked 34 in the world for Under 15 Boys.

A close opening set with Li winning in deuce set the pathway for the young player from Portugal, taking the early lead and doing well to cling to control in the match. It would be Li who stayed in control of the match and young Nikhil Kumar would walk away with a silver medal. A great effort and certainly a promising continuation of super results which have been accumulating in the past couple of years. Congratulations Nikhil!

The sibling Duo of Joanna and Rachel Sung also took away a silver medal together in the Cadet Girls Doubles where they launched a few surprises to reach the final. They successfully defeated teams from Singapore, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei before setting up a final appearance against Japan. Unfortunately their run ended there in the narrowest of margins as they were defeated 14-12 in the deciding 5th game. A superb effort and a number of high level teams defeated from the powerhouse continent of Asia. Great results from the girls for team USA! Well done!
