The second and final day of the Aurora Cup was filled with excitement as many more champions were crowned, and upsets abounded. 9 events commenced and concluded on Sunday including the Women’s Open, Over 40, Under 14, U2500, U2400, U2200, U1750, U1600 and U1000.
After losing to Fernando Yamazato (2483) in the Open singles event, Yue Wu (2533) came back strong to clinch the Women’s crown, losing only one game in the process. Nathan Hsu (2293), who had won the U18 event on Saturday became a double-crown winner, by fighting his way to the U-2400 title, where he beat Gabriel Skolnick (2282) in the final. Gabriel had earlier come back from a 0-2 deficit to beat top seeded Yitong Liu (2393) in the semi-finals.
The Under 14 and the Over 40 events both saw a lower seeded player overcome the top seeded player in the final. In the Under 14 event, Lavanya Maruthapandian (1733) overcame top seeded David Sun (2006) in a five game battle. Similarly in the Over 40 event, fourth seeded Don Hamilton (2138) overcame Chicago native Spencer Lam (2289) to clinch the Over 40 title.
Deepak Somarapu (1593) had a very successful tournament, winning both the U-1600 and U1750 events. In the U1750 event, Deepak survived a deuce in the fifth match to take the title over Josh Chung (1381). In other rating events, Fernando Yamazato (2483) took home the U2500 crown, Nathaniel Ming Curran (2194) took home the U2200 crown, and Danny Sternfield (940) took home the U1000 crown.
As the lights turned out, and tear down of the venue started, smiles were all around as players, spectators and tournament operators were all pleased with their weekend experience.
