Nathan Hsu (2293) is top seed for the Under 18 junior event at the 2014 Aurora Cup, but capturing the junior title is not the only reason he is making the trek from his home state of Maryland to Illinois.
2014 is his last year as a Junior, and as a high school student. Therefore, Nathan is hoping to find meaning in heading to Chicago. Born in Chicago almost 18 years ago, Nathan hopes to kick of 2014 with a trip back to his birth city and another junior title to his name. He has already collected numerous junior championship titles, but he is especially proud of receiving the Joel Ferrell Award at the 2011 Junior Olympics. This award is given to the athlete who demonstrates exceptional athletic ability and sportsmanship at the annual AAU Junior Olympic event. Past winners of the award include Ariel Hsing, Peter Li, Mark Hazinski, Han Xiao and many other past and present US National Champions.
Nathan will face some stiff competition in the Junior event from Tapabrata Dey (2143) who has spent time training in India and Maria Castillo (2112) from Lindenwood University.
Nathan will also compete with his father Hans Hsu in the Under 3800 Doubles, which he says he “hasn’t done in a really long time” but is looking forward to, and will spend the weekend in Illinois with his parents and brother.
