From the Notebook of USA's Coach Lily Yip:

ITTF Canadian Junior Open
Coach Alex Yang, Howard Tong, Teddy Tran, Kunal Chodri, Isabel Chu, Crystal Wang, and Coach Lily Yip

Scotiabank 2012 Canada Junior & Cadet Open, presented by Butterfly, Oct. 2-6, 2012, Markham, CAN

Attracting junior and cadet talent from Argentina, Canada, Guyana, Hong Kong, South Korea, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the USA, the Open drew a formidable field.

Representing the USA Girls were Isabel Chu, ranked #136 in the Cadets, and Crystal Wang, ranked #146. On the Boys side was Kunal Chodri (#145), Teddy Tran (#183), and Howard Tong (UR). The Boys' team was lead by the experienced top player and coach Alex Yang from Atlanta.

Results for the USA Team --as ITTF North American Team.

Both Boys and Girls won the Bronze.

For the Girls' Singles Qualifying Groups:

           W L  PTs
 1 CHU Isabel USA    3-0  3-1   2 0  4
 2  NICHOLS Amy CAN 0-3     2-3  0 2  2
 3  ZHANG Sheree CAN  1-3  3-2    1 1  3

            W  L PTs

 3  YAN Jane CAN 1-3  3-2    2-3 1 3  3
 4  KU Kyojin KOR 3-2   1-3  3-2   2 1  5

So we overcame any initial jitters, and our girls moved into the Main Draw. There I advised them to reduce pushing, to attack middle weaknesses, to drop shot and to flick short serves whenever possible. I am honored to serve as a ITTF North American Team coach. Our players's  creditable performances, as follows:

Round of 16:  Crystal Wang (USA) defeated Sheree Zhang (CAN) - 3-0 : 11-5, 11-7, 11-9

USA's Results:

Cadet Girls' Singles: Isabel Chu (USA) - Silver; Crystal Wang (USA) - Bronze

We were all impressed by Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico who is only 12 years old, but gaining experience on the ITTF Junior Circuit. She was the number #1 seed and ranked #89 in U 15. In closing, thanks to the many coaches, the USATT, sponsors, and supporting parents, our USA cadets and juniors continue to progress.
