Xiaoxia Li (CHN) vs. Ariel Hsing (USA) 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9
Speaking to HSING, 16, after ger game: "It was fantastic, you were amazing. The first game you started slow and then you were so amazing after that. Well done."
On how HSING played: "Nothing short of phenomenal, she was amazing. I played (table tennis) with her when she was nine, she's gotten so much better, she's playing with the world's best."
On HSING's game: "It would've been quite an upset (if Ariel had won). She's clearly got a great career ahead of her. It was a very close match with one of the best players in the world."
On HSING's future as a table tennis player: "She's gotten herself up to top level and to do that at 16 (years old) means she's got the potential to be as good as anyone."
"I've known her for seven years and she was looking forward to getting into the Olympics, she was very excited about that. Getting through to the third round and just continuing improving, she's great."
On how he met HSING: "My friend Warren BUFFETT (USA) got to play with her about seven years ago and we've rooted for her ever since then."
"Warren BUFFETT had a 75th birthday and he decided we should be beaten at various things, so they took us to play ping-pong with a nine-year-old who turned out to be Ariel."
On his predictions for the women's singles gold medal:"Anyone who beats Ariel is probably pretty good (laughs)."
On how many points he has won off HSING: "Zero, seriously. My service is actually illegal so I did get one (point) with an illegal serve, so that doesn't count, I don't think."
On whether he plays table tennis: "Yeah, in a casual way, I've never really played in competition, just with friends. Ariel and I have done some exhibitions but if I get any points it's only because she's let me."
"It's a fun game, every Olympics I've gotten the chance to go and watch the players. It's fun to watch, it's fun to play."
On how he supports HSING: "Just with encouragement. She's a really good student at the same time as she's playing ping-pong."
