Ping Pong in the Park - Denver

Sept. 13, 2011, 3 p.m. (ET)

Hello All,

I just got back from our Ping Pong in the Park, exhibition at Civic Center Park in Denver.  It was a great event with several hundred people being exposed to our sport.  Lt Governor, Garcia was on hand to read a proclamation from Governor Hickenlooper proclaiming September as “Ping Pong Diplomacy Month” in Colorado.  Lt Governor, Garcia also showed some good form on the table as he took on members of the winning University Team Event.

Four tables were set-up and play included a fun competition between five local universities, and exhibition play between local USATT Members.  In addition to the fine play, there was great food available from the many food vendors and many tables and chairs were set-up all around the venue.  The event was organized by the Institute of International Education and they did a great job.  They had about 20 volunteers working the event.

A big thanks to Francisco Mendez, former 9-time Men’s Champion of Mexico and Mr. Hussein, former National Champion of Iraqi.  They did a great job, in the wind, of putting on a “show” for the spectators while Coach McAfee worked the microphone.

All-in-all, this was an excellent advertisement for the upcoming Ping Pong Diplomacy Ball on September 30th and well as for the sport of table tennis in Denver.  We were able to give out lots of materials about our clubs and programs.

Thanks to everyone who came by to say hello and to hit some balls.  Please see slideshow!
