Mar 07 Para Pan Am Games - Team Event Day 2

Nov. 18, 2011, 1:29 a.m. (ET)

Dear Table Tennis Fans

Today here in Guadalajara we had Day 5 and the second day of the team event.

USA had 4 teams playing.

Women wheelchair class 1-3 with Pam Fontaine and Tara Profitt played against Venezuela and won 3-1 with Pam winning 2 matches quite comfortable and Tara winning one match against a class 3 player, gaining important ranking points for possible selection to the London games.

They will play their last match tomorrow at 12:00 noon against Mexico who is also undefeated, which will determine the Gold and silver medal finish.

Men's wheelchair team class 4-5 who played with Andre Scott and Stu Caplain against top seed from Brazil made a good effort and took some games but lost 3-0 and will play for the Bronze medal against Mexico tomorrow November 18 at 10:00 am.

Men's standing team class 9-10 with Tahl Leibovitz and Wayne Lo played the semifinal against Colombia who used the sliver medalist in class 7 and a class 9 player. Tahl won 2 matches quite comfortable and Wayne again had an unusual scenario played out for him. in his first match he played against the class 7 player who is a lower class than Wayne, and he was also the second player on the team and lost 3-1 in games. then he played against the umber 1 player who is a class 9 which means he has less of a disability than Wayne but now Wayne starts to play Surprisingly good again and wins 3-0, which takes the team to the final that will be played tomorrow at 12:00 noon against a very strong Brazil team. They have the winner in class 10 and Bronze medalist in class 9.

In the men's team standing class 6-8 Daryl Sterling and Chris Puls played a close match against Argentina but lost 3-1. Daryl won over their number 2 player and Chris was ahead 2-0 against the same player but was not able to pull through, which unfortunately means that the to games is over for them.

Tomorrow is the last day of the Games and USA has a chance to get 2 more Golds and one Bronze. Brazil is leading the medal count in overall for the Games all sports and also in Table Tennis. Mexico is in second place and USA is currently in third place, but if USA wins over Mexico tomorrow we move up to overall second place.

The overall team spirit has been fabulous and the Team members and staff have been very supportive of each other during the whole competition. Melissa Middleton our intelectually disabled athlete in class 11 and her CPA traveled home today because she does not have a team event to play. She played 2 matches and even though she lost both she was very supportive of everyone in the team and we enjoyed her very much. Pam Fontaine organized a signining of all team members on a Games mascot that we gave her when she organized farewell party for her.

She is a very talented athlete and we will see more of her in the future. She had to go through a very rigorous classification procedure and she passed the classification tests and now has a permanent ITTF classification for class 11.

Cheer for the USA Team at home when we play for medal tomorrow.
