Para Pan Am Games - Singles Medal Rounds

Nov. 15, 2011, 9 a.m. (ET)

Dear Para Pan AmTeam fans

Today November 15th was the medal round for the singles event.

USA had 5 athletes competing for a medal today in the single.

Daryl Sterling played for Bronze in standing class 7 singles against Argentina. He lost in a very tough match 3-1.

Tara Profitt who is wheelchair class 2 played in class 3 because it was not enough entries in her class so it got combined with the next highest class which is class 3. She played a very tough opponent from Mexico and lost 3-0. She however has had had an incredible tournament so far,  where she won 3 matches and will gain very valuable ranking points to qualify to London by ranking. She is currently ranked 14 in the world and she will most likely move up to 10th place after the matches she won just in singles.

Andre scott had a very spectacular match against the world ranked number 9 From Brazil. Andre is currently ranked number 31 in the world, and came in to this tournament as the 4th seed and before the final was played had moved up to 27  place. Andre has never beaten the Brazilian and the winner qualifies directly to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Andre played probably the match of his life. He was was ahead 2-1 in games against the Brazilian, he tied to 2-2 then Andre was ahead 6-2. Brazilian goes up 10-8 then Andre ties at 10-10. Andre finally after some incredible points loses at 12-10 in the 5th and final game. He left everything on the table and said after the match "I am hurt after putting in so much effort to qualify to London but it was maybe the best match of my life. The pressure was incredible and to be so close and still not make it really hurts".

It was incredible rallies and both players put everything the had on the table, they know the difference between winning and losing. Team USA had maybe 20 people present that were screaming them selves into oblivion trying to cheer Andre on and was competing with 100 Brazilians.

The whole arena was electrified.

Pam Fontaine played the final in women wheelchair class 3 against a player from Cuba. In the last Para Pan Am Games she won the Open singles against all wheelchair singles and is a very strong player. Pam was ahead 2-1, before the Cuban tied at 2-2. In the 5th and final game Pam was ahead 5-2 but after that lost 9 points in a row and the match. However because the Cuban do not have enough qualifying participation point she can still not qualify to London, and that gives Pam as the silver medalist the qualifying slot.

Tahl Leibovitz played against the next star from Mexico who is only 13 years old. He won after some minor difficulties 3-0 and so far the only Gold medal for USA in Table Tennis.

After the singles events USA has 1 Gold and 2 silver medals.

Tomorrow starts the Team event. USA has 4 teams that plays in the round robin stage.
