The United States women's table tennis team downed Nigeria 3-0 to advance to the bronze medal bracket of the team competition on Thursday. Team USA emerges as the No. 2 seed out of group B and will play on Friday, August 15 at 9:00 a.m. The opponent will be determined Thursday night when the quarterfinal draw is conducted.
Jun Gao (Gaithersburg, Md.) started off on fire with a 3-0 victory over Bose Kaffo while Chen Wang (New York, N.Y.) defeated Cecilia Otu Offiong 3-0. The pair of Gao and Crystal Huang (San Gabriel, Calif.) finished off Nigeria with a 3-0 win in doubles play.
The U.S. defeated the Netherlands 3-1 and fell to Singapore 3-0 on Wednesday in round robin play. The women's team champion will be crowned on August 18 while the bronze medal will be contested on August 17. Individual play will begin on Aug. 19.
