Executive Director Update June 2013
As I sat down to write this I learned of the passing of the great Esther Williams. While too young to see her in her prime, I recognize her amazing talent and contributions to both the film industry, the athletic world, and her role in the advancement of women in America. I hope you will take some time and revisit some of her film work; it is truly something to appreciate. I was particularly struck by some of the postings on our Facebook page that I have seen regarding Esther:
"With the passing of Esther Williams, of course I think of my own 'career' in synchronized swimming. I credit Synchro for so many things-- good grades in college, an amazing role model in Barbara McNamee, and two easier than easy child-births. Coaching Synchro for 8 years is one of my proudest accomplishments--I love watching "my girls" grow up, and my co-coaches remain--to this day--some of the best friends I could ask for. I'm not sure Esther Williams changed the world, but she certainly changed MINE!"
- Erin Linder Hildreth
“Thank you Esther from all the little girls that realized a dream of Synchronized Swimming.”
- Melinda Lumadue Savage
“Thank you for putting Synchro out there”
- Karen Keating Lincoln
“Thanks for making generations of little girls feel like princesses in the water!”
- Deborah Altizer
Additionally, we have just concluded USA Synchro de Mayo. First and foremost-- THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to all of the clubs and volunteers who made this month-long celebration and promotion possible.
In just its second year, USA Synchro de Mayo is proving to be a great vehicle to attract young athletes to our sport and to promote Synchro to the general public. My wish is that each club makes a commitment for 2014 to participate. Plan now! May 2014, let’s each do a Synchro event to make USA Synchro de Mayo even bigger and more well-known than ever before.I hope to see you at Age Groups and U.S. Open. Come introduce yourself. I would love to meet you!
