My name is Martha Socki and I am member of the Miami University Synchronized Swimming team, the Miami Marlins. When I was looking at colleges, I had no idea what I wanted to study, but I did know that I wanted to go to a school with a synchronized swimming team. I had never swam competitively, but I was on a performance team at my high school and knew it was something I wanted to continue. After swimming with the Miami Marlins for a year, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have it any other way. Next year I will be Vice President of our club, and I couldn't be more excited to return to Miami and my team in the fall!
The Miami Marlins club synchronized swimming team was the first women’s club sport team to represent Miami University of Oxford, Ohio. This fun fact is something everyone on the team loves to share with our peers. We take pride in our history as a club team. As a club team, we have the opportunity to make decisions about our organization; we decide the music, routines and choreography together. It’s a lot of hard work, but this way we really get to make the team what we want it to be. We’re aiming to amp up our routines and keep improving at our skills this coming season.
What I love about club synchro is the variety of experience levels we have on the team. Some of the girls have more than a decade of competitive synchro experience while others are completely new to the sport. We spend time learning and improving our skills for much of first semester. This is what makes it possible for girls with no prior experience to join the team. It’s fun to see the girls who started from scratch complete challenging routines. We accomplish so much in just one year!
The atmosphere is one of my favorite things about our team. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging. We have a can-do attitude and work hard, but we also know how to have fun. Outside of practice, we host team dinners and sleepovers. We also hold bake sales and other fundraising events to help pay for new costumes, travel expenses, etc.
What we are most looking forward to in the upcoming season is hosting the 2014 Collegiate Nationals! We want to make this an exciting and fun meet. We always love going to meets, but nationals is another experience. It’s cool to see all of the routines that aren't in our region and meet all of the other teams. Having everyone come together to compete and celebrate the sport of synchronized swimming is a really special experience. The Miami Marlins are incredibly honored to be hosting the event and would like to wish everyone good luck this coming season. We cannot wait to see everyone!
