Mary Killman Maria Koroleva named 2012 US Olympic Qualification Duet
INDIANAPOLIS – Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) and Mariya Koroleva (Concord, Calif.) have been selected as the duet for the 2012 U.S. Olympic qualification synchronized swimming team.
The duet is subject to approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee and qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by Team USA.
The U.S. team and duet will compete in an Olympic Qualification Tournament in London on April 18-22 for a chance to qualify a berth in the team and duet competitions for the Olympic Games.
“It’s a great feeling to reach something I’ve worked for practically my whole life,” Killman said. “I know a few people who have gone to the Olympics and they try to explain what it feels like, but there’s only so much words can say. I’m really excited for the opportunity.”
“It’s definitely rewarding to get this chance,” Koroleva said. “It’s extraordinary. It’s always been a dream.”
Killman and Koroleva teamed up to win the silver medal at the Pan American Games in October 2011 in their first competition together.
“At Pan Ams we had only been swimming together for two months,” Killman said. “I thought, How much further can we go if we can do this in two months?”
Said Koroleva: “It was a quick turnaround, and we buckled down and worked well together. We learned a lot from each other.”
“We are confident that the pairing of Killman and Koroleva can build on their strong performances from the Pan American Games and represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games,” said Sandra Mahoney, USA Synchro’s National Team Director. “I am sure these two athletes will truly continue to embrace all of the Olympic experience.”
Killman, USA Synchro’s Athlete of the Year the past two years, had a solid 2011, also finishing second in solo and fourth in duet at the Brazil Open, and second in duet and fourth in solo at the Barcelona Trophy.
Koroleva won the duet and team finals at the U.S. Collegiate Nationals for Stanford and was named a Collegiate All-American in 2011.
“Mary and Mariya proved their talent at the recent Pan American Games," said Executive Director Terry Harper. "They will be even more exciting to watch in London at the Olympic Games."Please contact Dax Lowery at firstname.lastname@example.org or 317-287-9403 for more information concerning the 2012 U.S. National Team.
