US in sixth place at Olympic Qualification Tournament
LONDON – Team USA stands in sixth place after the completion of the synchronized
swimming technical routine Thursday at the FINA Olympic Games Qualification
Tournament. Scores from Saturday’s free routine will determine final team standings,
with the top three countries advancing to the Olympic Games.
The U.S. scored 88.800 points on its tech routine at the London Aquatics Centre. Russia
(97.700) and Spain (96.100) took the top two spots, with Japan and Ukraine (93.500) tied
for third. Italy is just ahead of the U.S. for fifth place with 91.400 points.
The U.S. duet of Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) and Maria Koroleva (Concord,
Calif.) will compete Friday in the free routine. The duo is in seventh place out of 33 duets
after scoring 88.400 points in the technical routine on Wednesday.
The top 12 duets after Friday’s round will qualify for the Olympics. After the team
competition, there will be 20 qualified duets (including five that qualified through
continental championships and three from Saturday’s qualifying teams). The next eight
duets not yet qualified will have a final chance to earn an Olympic spot on Sunday, when
the final four duets will be named.
Eight teams and 24 duets will compete at the London Olympics when the synchronized
swimming event begins on Aug. 5. Five countries have already qualified teams (and
duets) by being the top-ranked squad at their respective continental championships. The
teams that have already qualified are Canada, China, Australia, Egypt and Great Britain
(as host nation).
