Take Five with Laura Berg
Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports sat down with USA Softball alumnus Laura Berg to get her thoughts on preparing for the unexpected. Laura currently serves as head softball coach at Oregon State University.
In our exclusive Take 5 interview, Laura shared that she mentally prepared for a big game by utilizing visualization techniques. Not only did she visualize the pitchers she might face and what they throw, but she also visualized her ideal swing.
Laura said that she views practice as the ultimate key to proper preparation in sports. The way Laura was taught to prepare, practice is supposed to be “harder than the game,” and empower an athlete’s confidence level on game day to “be through the roof.”
Laura also shared her early lessons about focusing on what you can control as an athlete – your attitude and your effort level. She added that she believes parents should really emphasize this approach with their young athletes, and also encourage them to “get comfortable” with being “at a disadvantage.”
“You can’t control what the umpires call, what the weather or field conditions will be like, if the games will be on time or what the ball does once it leaves your hands,” explained Laura. “You can only control how you react to it and the energy you bring to the field.”
In our interview, Laura also told us a great story involving detailed practice techniques to help prepare for any scenario during a softball game.
