Katie Keller named Collegiate Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY --- Louisville Cardinal second baseman Katie Keller (Livermore, Calif.) helped lead the now No. 13.Cardinals to a 4-1 record on the weekend after posting an impressive .667 (8-for-12) batting average with three doubles, seven runs and two RBI.

“It is such an honor to be selected as the USA Softball National Player of the Week,”said Keller. “Considering there are so many great softball players competing every week. I am grateful for the support of my teammates and coaches and that I have the opportunity to help my team be successful.”

The junior right-hander also drew seven walks on the weekend for an .800 on-base percentage and registered a .917 slugging percentage. Keller had at least one hit and one walk in every game and scored at least one run in four of the Cards’ five games on the weekend. Against a then No. 11 LSU, she went 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks. She was also 2-for-2 in the wins over Temple and Georgia Tech. Keller now leads the team with a .450 batting average, 20 RBI and 22 runs on the season.

“Katie had a great weekend and I am excited that she has received this national recognition,” said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall. “She is a fierce competitor and the kind of player you want up to bat at a crucial time. She has worked hard to prepare for this season and it is certainly paid off so far.”

This marks the first time since 2006 and the inception of this award that a University of Louisville athlete has garnered the honor. Keller was also recognized as the Big East Conference Player of the Week and this is the second time she received that honor this season. 

Up next for the Cardinals, they will play host at the Red & Black Tournament which welcomes No. 14 Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Austin Peay, Illinois State and Western Kentucky.
