Kick Off a Responsible Season

The start of the season is coming up!

Young softball players are getting ready for tryouts. Coaches are drawing up practice plans. Administrators are dotting i’s and crossing t’s.  Of course, parents are preparing too!

Responsible Sports is preparing too—preseason tips for you!

1.  Determine Goals: Ask your youth sports athletes to write down all the reasons they want to play this season. Then ask them to rank their Top 3…but don’t look at their lists just yet. Make a list of your reasons, and then rank your Top 3. Next, work with them to determine mutual goals.

2.  Embrace Mastery Approach™: Athletes of all levels, from recreational to world-class, succeed when they adopt this approach.  What is a Mastery Approach™?

3.  Open Communication: Coaches: Host a parents meeting at the beginning of the season. What should you discuss?  Also ask team parents to respect the coach-athlete relationship and join you in a pledge to maintain a Responsible Sports environment. Here’s some Positive Coaching Alliance handouts that will help you prepare for this meeting.

4.  Have Fun: Sometimes, in all of the season planning and organizing, we forget one core truth—we play sports because it’s fun. Remind yourself and your young athletes!

So as the season fast approaches, join us in our pledge to enjoy a Responsible Sports season—a season filled with sportsmanship, life lessons, great competition, and exceptional athletes, coaches, and parents.

At Liberty Mutual Insurance, we constantly look for ways to celebrate the countless acts of responsibility shown by people every day. We created Responsible Sports, powered by Positive Coaching Alliance, as part of this belief to help ensure that our kids experience the best that sports have to offer in environments that promote and display responsibility. We believe kids can learn valuable life lessons when coaches and parents come together to support winning on and off the field. Join the Responsible Sports movement!
