OKLAHOMA CITY — Following their flawless Big-12 Conference opening weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners (34-2, 3-0 Big 12) swept the votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced today. For the second time this season, the No. 1 Sooners captured all 20 first-place votes and have held the top spot for nine consecutive weeks.
The Sooners met up with then-No. 17 Baylor (29-10, 3-5 Big 12) for a three-game series over the weekend in Norman to kick off Big 12 Conference Play. In game one, the Sooners picked up an 8-3 win and added one more run in game two to come out on top 9-3 over the Bears. Oklahoma finished the series in typical Sooner fashion with a six-inning, 8-0 run-rule. The Sooners also faced then-No. 18 Tulsa (31-19-1, 11-1 CUSA) in a standalone game on Thursday and came out with a 3-1 win.
Arizona State (36-4, 7-2 Pac-12), holds on to the No. 2 spot this week despite suffering a loss to then-No. 14 Stanford (27-12, 5-7 Pac-12). The Sun Devils took game one 12-6 over the Cardinal and followed it with a 11-2 (six-innings) win during Saturday’s doubleheader, but fell 4-3 on Sunday during the series final game.
Tennessee (34-6, 9-3 SEC) claims the No. 3 spot this week following their dominating performance over Southeastern Conference (SEC) rivals, Georgia. The Lady Vols began their week by defeating Western Carolina 11-2 (five-innings) and Tennessee State 19-1 (five innings) before heading to Athens, Ga. for the conference matchup. The Lady Vols swept the series, defeating the Bulldogs 10-3, 9-2 and 6-1.
Florida (38-4, 12-3 SEC) fell one spot to No. 4 this week after falling to Mississippi State in the final game of their series. The Gators won the first two games of the series (9-1, 4-2) before being handed a 6-5 loss by Mississippi State on Sunday. Prior to their matchup with the Bulldogs, Florida topped Central Florida 2-1.
Alabama (35-6, 10-5 SEC) rose to No. 5 this week following their 2-1 performance against then-No. 6 Missouri (23-4, 8-3 SEC). The Tide won game one of the series 4-1, fell 9-4 in game two, and rebounded with a 14-6 (six innings) win in game three. Oregon (33-6, 10-2 Pac-12) rose three spots to No. 6 this week after their stellar performance against last week’s No. 4 California (30-6, 6-3 Pac-12). The Ducks swept Pac-12 Conference rivals Utah (11-3, 11-1 and 5-2) before their 2-1 series win over California.
Rounding out the Top 10: No. 7 Texas (35-4, 4-0 Big 12) had a win over Texas Southern and two wins over Western Kentucky; No. 8 California fell four spots this week after suffering a loss to No. 22 Arizona (26-13, 4-5 Pac-12) and then-No. 9 Oregon; No. 9 Missouri picked up two wins over Missouri State before their 1-2 performance against Alabama; No. 10 Louisville (32-6, 4-0 Big East) cracked the Top 10 following their wins over then-No. 20 Kentucky (27-10, 8-4 SEC) and St. John’s.
Rejoining the Top 25 this week is No. 25 Florida State (31-13, 10-2 ACC), who last appeared in the Top 25 in Week 2 of this season. Dropping out is last week’s No. 23 Wisconsin (28-6, 6-3 Big 10).
