Tennessee’s Raven Chavanne named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week

May 01, 2012, 3:32 p.m. (ET)

OKLAHOMA CITY — Raven Chavanne of Thousand Oaks, Calif. is the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for April 23-29, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today. Chavanne batted .833, with six runs scored and five stolen bases helping the Lady Volunteers to a 4-0 record on the week.

“It is such an honor for me to be named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week,” said Chavanne. “Just to be recognized as part of such a great award is always a huge accomplishment for our softball program. I definitely want to say how much I appreciate the strength and support of my teammates and coaches in helping me try to become the best player I can be, because honors like this wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Chavanne was dominant from the plate, raising her SEC-leading overall batting average from .404 to .439 with her week’s effort. The Lady Vol junior managed to reach successfully in 12 of her 15 total plate appearances and stretched her streak of reaching base successfully to a career-best 33 straight games. Chavanne was able to lead off innings by successfully reaching base in six-of-seven opportunities. She was perfect at the plate during three of the week’s four match-ups.

“We are very happy that Raven is being honored by USA Softball as its Collegiate Player of the Week,” said Lady Vol Co-Head Coach Ralph Weekly. “She’s a tremendous player and a great student both on and off the field of play. She’s truly the type of player every coach wants to coach.”

Chavanne’s efforts this week helped the Lady Volunteers move up one spot and into the Top 5 of this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25. This is the first USA Softball Player of the Week award for Chavanne and the first time a Tennessee player has garnered the award since Ellen Renfroe received the honor in May of 2011.
