Cordes: Life on the road with USA Softball

Hello softball world!

It’s Cheyenne Cordes and I am back for another blog.

If you don’t already know both the USA Softball Women’s National Team and my team, the Junior Women's National Team, are traveling together right now. Our trip consists of exhibition games between us, the little girls, and the Women’s National Team, the big girls. As of right now we are in Florida, we will soon be going to our next stop Virginia, and then after that we are off to Maryland.

Florida is a new experience for me. I am a “California Girl”. I am not used to the bipolar weather that Florida has to offer, but I do have to admit that the constant heat is wonderful. It’s hot and sticky here all the time, rain or shine. The one thing I am not too fond of is the rain. One second it is nice, hot and sunny, and then the next second it is ugly, hot and rainy.

The girls and I are having a wonderful time being together again. We have just picked up where we left off in Colombia. It’s like we haven’t been apart for almost a year. All these girls are so great. I have never been on a team where every single girl on the team gets along and likes each other. This team is definitely a rarity, and I can feel it in my socks that we are destined to do something big together.

We are practicing at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Fla., and I must say that they have beautiful facilities. Our first practice was a complete success. We came together and worked hard to take care of business. We had a morning session of hitting where our new assistant coach Tony Rico shared some of his wonderful hitting knowledge with us. We then had our much needed showers and lunch. After our short break we then returned to the field where we worked on our defense. I personally play outfield and middle infield and let me tell you, the coaching staff really put us to work. My favorite thing to say is perfect practice makes perfect, not just practice makes perfect. In order to be successful against the big girls we have to “play catch and communicate…” as Tony Rico would say. So basically, do all the little things better than them… Which will not be easy to do considering the fact that these are the best pitchers, catchers, fielders, and hitters in the world.

Last night was our first doubleheader against the big girls. We were not successful in getting the win, but we definitely learned a lot and our game improved as every inning of the games went on. I think us “little girls” let our nerves and excitement get the best of us. I personally was so excited and hyped up that I had a hard time slowing my game down in my first couple at bats. I would like to give a shout out to my pitchers and tell them I recognize the work they are doing.

It’s not an easy task pitching to the best hitters in the world.

To me, being on the same field with those girls was about one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. Though these girls are close to me in age I can’t help but put them on a pedestal because they are the Women’s National Team. My dream is to one day be a part of that team, to be a big girl. I hope to have the opportunity one day.

Tomorrow is our travel day to Virginia. I am anxious to see what Virginia has to offer. I am also excited to have another chance against the big girls.

I am leaving you all with a quote for my USA teammates. “In order to succeed, your desire should be greater than your fear of failure.” Bill Cosby. Ladies we play a game full of failure, our job is to grow from the failure and not spend too much time on the great success we have achieved.

Be sure to watch our game on game tracker! Show us your much needed support!

Until next time readers!
