April 19, 2011, 9:53 a.m. (ET)

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today that Indiana University’s Morgan Melloh (Fishers, Ind.) was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for the Week of April 11-17. Indiana received votes, 10 points, in this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll after a 5-0 weekend which saw Melloh throw 58 strikeouts for a 4-0 record with one save.

"It is a tremendous honor to receive this award and I am very grateful. Without the support of my family, coaches and teammates it would not have been possible,” said Melloh. “My teammates made some outstanding plays in the field behind me so it was a total team effort. We had a lot of confidence coming into the week and came up with the hits when we needed them to keep that confidence going in Big Ten play."

Her 4-0 record came against Big Ten opponents Ohio State (3-2 and 9-0) and Wisconsin (4-3 and 6-3). She entered in during the fourth inning against Indiana State for the save. Her 29.1 innings of work included a 21 strikeout performance against Wisconsin on Saturday, a 4-3 (eight) victory, along with two other double digit strikeout performances. She recorded 15 strikeouts in seven innings in the opening game against Ohio State, allowing two runs. She closed out the week issuing 12 strikeouts to Wisconsin.

"This is a phenomenal honor for Morgan and our program and we could not be more proud of her,” said Indiana Head Coach Michelle Gardner. “She was outstanding in all five games last week but to have 21 strikeouts in an eight-inning game against a very good Wisconsin team was truly special."

In the 9-0 victory over Ohio State on April 13, Melloh recorded seven strikeouts in five innings, also giving up two hits. She was a part of the offense that forced a run-rule going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

For her efforts she was also named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the third straight week on Monday, becoming just the fifth pitcher in Big Ten history to claim the award three straight weeks. This is the first-time honor for Melloh.
