OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association announced today that UMass's Samantha Salato (Toms River, N.J.) was selected the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for the Week of April 12-19. The senior hit .571 but it was the magnitude of those hits that earned her this honor as seven of her eight hits were homeruns.
“I feel very honored to win this award. To be considered with some of the top players in the country is very humbling,” said Salato. “I am just happy that I was able to help the team win.”
Salato batted .571 (8-14) for the week, hitting an incredible seven home runs with a double in four games. The senior leftfielder drove in 11 runs and slugged 2.143 while scoring seven runs. She homered twice and drove in four runs vs. Providence, following that performance with a solo shot against Boston University. Salato played a key role in UMass 3-2 eight-inning win over George Washington as she homered for UMass' first run, doubled, and hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
“This is really wonderful for Sam,” said UMass Head Coach Elaine Sortino. “I am very proud of her and happy that her hard work is being rewarded. I am really speechless.”
To cap off the 4-0 weekend and extend their Atlantic 10 record to 10-0, Salato hit a solo home run and a three-run home run for her third multi-homer game of the week against George Washington.
This is the first time honor for Salato as USA Softball Player of the Week.
