Oklahoma City, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association announced today the selection of Stanford pitcher Missy Penna (Miami, Fla.) as the first USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week for the 2008 season. With a 3-0 record, Penna helped lead the Cardinal to a perfect 4-0 weekend and a No. 14 ranking in this weeks ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll.
“I am extremely honored to be chosen by USA Softball from so many outstanding players,” said Penna. “It was a great team effort this weekend and I give a lot of credit to my team for playing such great defense. I’m excited about the way we started the season and am looking forward to seeing our team develop the rest of this year.”
“It is a great honor for Missy and our program to be recognized by USA Softball,” said Stanford head coach John Rittman. “Missy has worked extremely hard during the offseason to prepare for this year. She came out last weekend and really set the tone for our season. She showed what she’s capable of both in the circle and as a leader on our team. It exciting to watch her develop as a pitcher and we look forward to her continued success.”
