A native of Artesia, N.M., Sims threw a no-hitter against No. 6 Oklahoma and pitched the Wolfpack past No. 4 Arizona State during the tournament last weekend. She was sensational throughout her performance against the Sooners as she struck out 10 batters, hit one, and issued just three free passes while shutting down the nation’s No. 1 offense en route to tossing her second no-hitter of the season.
Against Arizona State Sims allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out 14 to collect her second win over a top 10 opponent. She also contributed at the plate by smashing a two-run double to left field in the fourth inning to tie the game.
The win over No. 4 ASU marks the highest-ranked opponent that the Wolfpack has ever defeated and is the first-ever win over a Pac-10 opponent.
"This is a great honor for Abbie," said head coach Lisa Navas. "She did an outstanding job and I'm very proud of what she has done."
Sims also played in the outfield for NC State and was very productive at the plate collecting four RBI, two home runs, one run scored, one double, one walk and a .333 batting average for the week.
On Saturday against Florida State, who had been ranked in the top 25 most of the season, Sims was a perfect 3-for-3 including a two-run homer to tie the game in the top of the sixth. The Wolfpack went on to win the game 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning.
This is the first time any player from NC State has been selected as the USA Softball National Player of the Week. NC State returns to action this week as they travel to Georgia Tech for a three-game series this weekend.
