USA Enters Medal Rounds as No.1 Seed
Caguas, Puerto Rico – The USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team have now defeated every team at the 2006 Junior Women’s Pan American Championships after beating Antilles Holandesas 15-0 (4 inning) in the final game of round-robin play. Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.) and Megan Elliott (Prince Frederick, MD) combined for a perfect game with 10 strikeouts between them and the fifth no-hitter of the tournament for the U.S.
K’Lee Arredondo (Tempe, Ariz.) led off in the first for the Red, White and Blue with a double to left field. She scored on a shot up the middle by Brittany Lastrapes (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). A triple off the bat of Maggie Viefhaus (Pacific, Mo.) plated two runs, scoring Lastrapes and Monica Harrison (Garden Grove, Calif.) who was hit by a pitch. Viefhaus scored on a groundout by Bianca Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) to head into the bottom of the first with a 4-0 advantage.
After scoring a run in the second, the team almost doubled its run production in the third inning by plating seven runs. The U.S. had six hits in the third including three extra base hits by Arredondo, Lastrapes and Mejia. Arredondo hit a two-RBI triple and was followed by Lastrapes who smashed her team leading third triple of the tournament for an RBI. Mejia, who leads the team six doubles, hit her fifth to tack on another RBI.
Brignac, in her third start of the tournament, struck out eight of the nine batters she faced before Elliott came in to pitch the final inning, striking out two.
With a 12-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, the U.S. needed only three runs to conclude the game in four innings and that’s what they got. A groundout by Ashley Hansen (Chandler, Ariz.) scored Viefhaus who reached on base with a walk. A triple by Neena Bryant (Placentia, Calif.) scored Mejia, who hit her second double of the game to get on base. Bryant scored the final run of the game on a groundout.
The U.S. enters medal play on Friday as the No. 1 seed. They will face Venezuela at 5:30 CT on Friday. The winner of that game will play the winner of the No. 3 vs. No.4 seed which is yet to be determined.
