Osterman Named USA Softball Player of the Week

Feb. 28, 2006, 2:03 p.m. (ET)

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After setting the NCAA career strikout record against UNLV with 1,744 Ks, the University of Texas' Cat Osterman was named the USA Softball National Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 20-26.  Osterman led her team to a 5-0 weekend with three victories over ranked teams.

Osterman (Houston, Texas) wrapped up the weekend at the Palm Spring Classics with an 18-strikeout, three-hit performance against No. 1 Arizona that handed the Wildcats their first loss of 2006 and extended UT's winning streak to a national-best (tying Arizona State) 15 games.  Osterman is now 4-1 against the Wildcats.

"This award is a great way for Cat to top off the week she had.  Cat had a phenomenol five games last week, including four at one of the premier tournaments in the country," said Texas head coach Connie Clark of Osterman's accomplishment.  "We're really proud of her for breaking the NCAA strikeout record because it's such an amazing accomplishment."

Osterman set a Texas record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game (passing her old mark of 19) with 20 strikeouts against UTSA, a complete game one-hitter.  She also earned wins against No. 6 Stanford, her second of the year against the Cardinals, and No. 23 Fresno State after entering in the fourth as relief with bases loaded and two outs.

"This week was a very good week for both our team and me individually.  It was amazing to break the strikeout record which is something that I've been aiming for but more importantly, it was nice for our team to get some big wins," said Osterman of this fifth-time honor.  "I'm truly blessed to be in the position to receive this honor."

Osterman was also named the 2003 and 2005 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.
