USOC Honors Jessica Mendoza and National Women's Softball Team for July Accomplishments
 
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The U.S. Olympic Committee announced USA softball player Jessica Mendoza as one of its July Athletes of the Month and the U.S. National Women’s Softball Team as the USOC Team of the Month. The team was honored for its accomplishments during the month of July which included a II World Cup of Softball Championship title.
 
Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) led the USA Women's Softball Team with an astounding 16 RBI with three homeruns at last month's II World Cup of Softball Championship. She finished second in the six-game event with a batting average of .611 with 11 hits accounting for 21 total bases. On the month, which included the World Cup, two four-game exhibitions against NPF Arizona Heat and Texas Thunder and an exhibition game against the World University team, Mendoza holds a .396 batting average with a team-high 27 RBI and five homeruns.
 
The USA Women's Softball Team was a perfect 6-0 in its first International event of the season as they brought the II World Cup of Softball Championship trophy back to the United States with a 5-2 win over Japan. The team lost the Championship game during last year's Cup, but an explosive offensive and stellar defense proved that Team USA is the team to beat. The team outscored opponents 59-3 with a team batting average of .453. In the six-game event, they combined for 73 hits with 20 extra base hits while the pitching staff allowed only 17 hits in 34 innings with two earned runs. In 14 games played in the month of July, including the World Cup, two four-game exhibitions versus the NPF Arizona Heat and Texas Thunder, the team hit .364 with 100 RBI. The pitching staff held opposing teams to a .129 average, allowing only eight earned runs.
 
The Women’s National Team will next head to Beijing, China to defend their title at the ISF World Championships held Aug. 27 to Sept. 5.
