UCLA's Duran selected Player of the Week

April 11, 2006, 2:36 p.m. (ET)
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Amateur Softball Association announced today the selection of UCLA senior third baseman Andrea Duran as the USA Softball National Player of the Week.  Duran (Selma, Calif.) hit .545 for the weekend, going 6-for-11 with five runs scored, a double, three home runs, four RBI and a 1.455 slugging percentage to lead her team back to the No. 1 spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.

She began her exceptional weekend against No. 9 Arizona State by putting a full-count pitch over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season.  She later homered in the fourth inning to lead the Bruins past the Sun Devils.

"Andrea is our team leader in every sense of the word," said head coach Sue Enquist.  "She has a great character, is a great performer and loves the game.  her performance this past weekend proves how special a talent she is."

On Saturday night in Tucson against archrival Arizona, Duran led off the game with a double and came around to score UCLA's first run of the night in the 2-1 victory.  Sunday's game started the same way as Friday night's win at ASU, with Duran putting the second pitch of the game over the fence.  She led off the third inning with a single and scored a run.  She was intentionally walked to load the bases in the fourth inning and singled to lead off the sixth inning in UCLA's 8-3 win over the Wildcats.

"I am excited and honored to win this award," said Duran.  "It is particularly exciting to have achieved this honor following such an important weekend for our team."

UCLA's two victories over Arizona this past weekend were the Wildcats' first home losses of the season and the first time the Bruins swept their archrival in Tuscon since May 2, 1986.

Duran was also named the Pac-10 Player of the Week, the first time there has been a repeat winner this season.  This is the first time she has been honored as the USA Softball National Player of the Week.
