USA Elite set for competition at 1st World University Softball Championship

PLANT CITY, FL --- The USA Softball Elite team will begin competition at the 1st World University Softball Championship in Plant City, FL on Tuesday, October 26 as they battle two-time defending Junior World Champion Japan at 2:30 p.m. Starting pitcher Alicia Hollowell (Suisun, CA) will lead the U.S from the circle as the Red, White and Blue look to take home the gold.
“We have a lot of talent and many of these women have played together this summer, or have played together on junior and other national-type teams,” head coach Jay Miller said. “We know each other pretty well. It’s very competitive at this age level and it will be very interesting this week to see how everybody matches up.”
A second match up later in the evening on Tuesday against Chinese Taipei at 7:15 p.m., the U.S. arrived in Plant City on Sunday evening before completing a full day of practice on Monday.
“The team is really excited to be here,” said Hollowell. “We have one goal in mind and that is to take home the title. We know that international competition is always tough because it is a different level of play. We will have to come out strong and play our game.”
A field of eight countries including Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Guatemala, Japan, the Netherlands, and the USA will compete in the five day event. The championship will be jointly organized by the United States Collegiate Sports Council and the International Softball Federation and will be run in accordance with the most recent technical regulations of FISU and the International Softball Federation (ISF).
