USA Softball sweeps exhibition series over Italy with 1-0 win
Tierrenia, Italy---The U.S. used text book softball to get past Italy 1-0 in its final game of a three game exhibition series today in Tierrenia, Italy. In the bottom of the third inning Natasha Watley (Irvine, CA) reached on an infield single, stole second and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Leah O’Brien-Amico (Chino Hills, CA). Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, CA) took advantage of the situation driving a 1-2 pitch back up the middle for the go ahead run.
That would be the only run the U.S. would need as the pitching staff remained dominant. Cat Osterman (Houston, TX) and Jennie Finch (La Mirada, CA) combined to shutout the Italians for the third consecutive game. Osterman fanned eight batters in four innings while allowing only a single hit. Finch got the save after working three innings allowing only one hit and striking out six.
The powerful U.S. offense was limited to just six hits on the day after pounding the Italian pitching staff in its first two games.
The team has the day off on Monday before traveling back to the U.S. on Tuesday. It will reconvene in Chula Vista, CA for a brief team camp on May 10th before heading to New York for the USOC Media Summit on Thursday May 13th. The second half of the ‘Aiming for Athens’ Tour begins on May 17th in San Antonio, TX.
