The USA Women's Eagle Sevens team will make their third Cup semifinal appearance in as many tournaments in the 2011-2012 season after dominating Pool D of the Hong Kong IRB Women's Challenge Cup tournament. Spain and Tunisia fell victim to a very fit and very physical Eagles outfit. On day two, the USA will play the Pool C winner at 10:05 p.m. Mountain on Friday March 23.
The USA had an early scare in its Hong Kong Sevens opener against Spain, finding themselves down 0-5 at half time. Vanesha McGee helped her team to fight back and close the gap early in the second half. A penalty against Spain late in the game opened the door for the Eagles and a cool drop kick sealed the deal and gave the USA a winning start in Hong Kong.
Tunisia was held scoreless and Navy's Jane Paar scored a try on her USA debut. USA captain Deven Owsiany got a brace in the Tunisia effort and Berkeley All-Blues standout Irene Gardner also chimed in on the score sheet.
