Susie continues to be an inspiration to everyone at Greensboro Roller Derby and consistently impresses with her dedication, charisma, and talent both on and off skates. Susie is a senior at Guilford College and a regular contributor to our blog (http://greensbororollerderby.blogspot.com/2012/04/ensusiasm.html). Her “enSUSiasm” for the sport, for life and for womanhood is unstoppable!
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
Occupation and Current Employer: Right now, I am a nanny and senior at Guilford College.
Career goals: I would love to be a sports writer for a small town paper and help change the way people write about and view women's sports. I also hope to have a lot of land one day so I can foster dogs.
Current League: I proudly skate for my hometown league, Greensboro Roller Derby. I play for the Elm St. Nightmares (inter-league) and the Gate City Rollergirls (travel). I am a captain of the Elm St. Nightmares.
Derby name and number: Miller Lightnin' .08
Years involved in derby: Three great years!
Coaches name (s): I am blessed with several coaches and they all deserve to be named: Dylan Walters, Del Shanese Vajdl, John Umberger, Jason Boudreaux, Mark Harden,Torry Nergart, and Crckt Leggett.
Favorite Derby Position: I am proud to call myself a “utility” skater, meaning I will (and can) play any position my coach tells me to play. But, if I get to pick-I love to be the wrecking ball, which is the offensive blocker who clears the way for the jammer.
When did you begin skating: I started skating the week of our league's first interest meeting three years ago and never stopped. I also always insisted on having my birthday parties at the local skating rink when I was a little kid. If my mom had only known that would be the seed that started all of this!
Fondest memory of skating: Our first bout was “Brains” versus “Fangs” and it was epic. We had chainsaws, loud metal blasting over the speakers, crazy fans, and we didn't know much about anything except that we were playing this sport to have an awesome time. The icing on the cake was that my best friend and I both got MVP.
Future goals you hope to obtain as a skater: I have been told I am a bit of a flight risk when I jam, so I would really like to work on staying out of the box when I have the star on.
Awards, honors, and statistics received in roller sports: I have been blessed with getting the Spirit Award two years running for our league. I have also received MVP three times, and every single time it was such a huge honor (and shock) that I cried the whole way home.
Other sports you currently participate in: I skateboard with the kids I nanny for and I love to run.
Who is your favorite sports figure?: Where to begin?! Who didn't fall in love with our gymnastics team this year? Or Hope Solo? I also love love love the Williams sisters. Their strength, talent, and work ethic inspires me everyday. But my heart will always belong to the late and great Flo Jo, who has been my favorite athlete since I was a little girl. As far as derby heroes go, I gotta go local: Schoolya Childs (Lindsey Bryant). Schoolya is my derby wife and my favorite skater to hit and be hit by and she is my best friend.
Who is the person you most admire/greatest influence in your life and why: The greatest influence in my life is my family; my dad for his honesty, my mom for her big heart, my older brother for his ambition, and my little brother for his wit. I have the most awesome family in the whole world.
List your hobbies: I love to read, write, play with my dogs, and work out.
What music do you listen to during training or competition: Before a bout I have a play list I warm up to on my own: Beyonce, Katy Perry, Robyn, AC/DC, and more Beyonce!
What makes you a unique and special person: I would like to think I am special because I genuinely try to choose the right way over the easy way.
Favorite food before a competition: Two peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Favorite movie: Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings, Neverending Story, Return to Oz, and Ghostbusters.
Favorite place to shop: I love thrift stores and my favorite is my friend Susan's shop Wild N' Crazy Vintage. I also love to get my skate gear from another friend's shop (also named Susan!) called Derby City Skates.
Most prized possession: When my grandfather passed away my dad gave me his watch. I don't usually put sentimental value on objects, but something about that watch makes me feel good. I think of it as a good reminder that I can't control time, but I can control what I do with the time I have.
If you could pick one word to describe you, what would it be: Loyal.
Anything else you would like us to know about you: I would like to thank my teammate, Caitlin Birney aka Hitter Miss, for nominating me for this honor. Hitter is a great friend and teammate and to have her say such nice things about me warms my heart. I am lucky to have her in my life.
