FOUR $250 JAN PORTER MEMORIAL AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN OUT ANNUALLY
July 5, 2012 – Lincoln, Neb. – Jan Porter Memorial Awards
Beginning with the 2012 Indoor National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, four $250 Jan Porter Memorial Awards will be given out. The first place male and first place female in elementary and freshman will be the recipient of the Jan Porter Memorial Award. To claim the award, the recipient must attend a USARS developmental banked track clinic within one year of receiving the award.
Lou Alcorn initially developed the fund with the intent of helping to send one individual each year to a developmental banked track clinic. Lou stated, “grassroots development was really important to Jan and I wanted to do something to keep that alive.”
Jan Porter loved roller sports and was very actively involved in roller speed skating right up until she passed away in 2001. Jan died suddenly of brain aneurysm while coaching a speed practice at Roller City (her family-owned roller skating rink) in Cheyenne, Wyo. Some of Jan’s speed involvement included managing the World Team (1993, 1994, 1999, 2000), coaching a successful Junior World Team (1996, 1997,1998) and coaching local speed skaters, with her husband Rick from 1975-2001. Jan was inducted into the USARS Coaches’ Hall of Fame with her husband Rick Porter in 1995 and the couple was inducted into the Distinguished Service Hall of Fame in 2001. Jan was elected to the Board of Directors for a three-year term as Grassroots Director, but was unable to serve her term due to her death.
The Porter family is extremely grateful to Lou for starting the fund and is excited to see it expand to reach more skaters. The family also wants to send out a big thank you to everyone that contributed to the Jan Porter Memorial fund at Jan’s funeral, Brandi’s funeral (Jan’s youngest daughter)* and any other time throughout the years.
*Jan’s youngest daughter, Brandi passed away in 2009 from complications from a knee surgery. Brandi was a national-champion speed skater and the fund in her mom’s name was extremely important to her. The Jan Porter Memorial fund received contributions at Brandi’s funeral to help its continued growth in an effort to provide financial assistance to more speed skaters.
