USARS Introduces New Roller Derby Committee
Following the recognition of Roller Derby as an official discipline of the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS), USA Roller Sports announces the creation of a new organizing committee to focus specifically on the rapidly growing sport.
The USARS Roller Derby Committee has been tasked with creating a unified framework for the practice and organization of the sport. The objective of the committee is to increase participation across gender and age groups, and ensure the continuous growth of the sport by making it more accessible, safer and unified under a global set of rules and standards for players, coaches and officials. The committee also strives to encourage official FIRS-sanctioned international competition including, but not limited to, the Olympic movement.
The committee work will target specific areas of the sport, including the consolidation and simplification of the rules, the establishment of formal programs for coaching, officiating and development, and the creation of support mechanisms for new and existing leagues. Members of the committee, who are also part of the derby community, have been encouraged to engage with interested parties on each of the areas of work in order to bring together proven concepts and new ideas from all styles and levels of play.
USARS’ vision is to provide a more global, consistent and inclusive approach to the organization of the sport, with the hope that this approach will support a safe and standardized environment for competition while making roller derby more accessible to the public.
With the enormous growth of the sport, both in popularity and practice, USARS believes this is the right time to start molding the future of roller derby as an international sport. USARS member leagues can expect to receive additional information as the work progresses as they will be called upon quite frequently for feedback.
