Day 4 Rink Hockey World Championships

Oct. 02, 2009, 8:22 p.m. (ET)

The first day of the finals round at the 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships in Bassano del Grappa, Italy matched Team USA with a strong team from South Africa. We started out a little flat, and couldn’t get into sync until about half way through the first half. Allen Davis scored off a pass from Shawn Schmelcher to get us up 1-0, which is how the first half ended. They came out pressing us the second half, we got a break on the cage and Shawn scored again. A few minutes later, South Africa was able to score off a long slap shot. We answered a short time later with another goal from a penalty shot. They kept trying to press us to get the ball, giving us opportunities to steal the ball and score again. We then slowed the game down, which put them into a panic mode, giving us chances to intercept their passes and control the rest of the game. With 3 seconds left, they were given a penalty shot, which Leonard Burnett saved to secure our win. Final score 4-2 USA!! Scorers for Team USA: Shawn Schmelcher 3 goals, Allen Davis 1 goal.  Tomorrow we play Angola. Keep up the good work guys!
GO TEAM USA!!!
