In Memory of Joan (Labriola) Thorn
Passing of an “Icon”
It is with sadness that we report the death of Joan (Labriola) Thorn. Joan died on December 6, 2009 and was the mother of 6 children and 15 grandchildren. Joan was widowed from Bob Thorn.
Joan was a very talented partner and sister of Team Bob Labriola and Joan Labriola who won the National Senior Dance Title 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953. She and Bob also placed 2nd in Junior Dance (now Freshman) and 3rd in Intermediate Dance (now Junior) in the 1940’s.
Joan is a member of the skaters hall of fame and an original inductee in 1983. An additional interesting fact is that Joan was pregnant in two of the instances in which she won Senior Dance at the Nationals.
Her Brother, Bob Labriola had this to say about his sister: “Although I was more involved with skating while we were competing, she was undoubtedly a much better skater than I was. She was the perfect partner, always doing what I wished, but using her feminine guile, to always get what she wanted in the long run. Whenever we competed, she was the one who kept her excitable brother under control. I loved her dearly, respected her so much and will miss her”.
Bob indicates if anyone wishes to send condolences they may be sent to

We offer our own condolences to the Labriola family and note that Joan added to the development of our sport and the rich history of great champions that Roller Sports has demonstrated.
