USA Racquetball Announces Delegation for 2013 World Games
Colorado Springs, CO – USA Racquetball announced today the participation of four U.S. athletes in the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia. Rocky Carson, Cheryl Gudinas, Rhonda Rajsich, and Jose Rojas will make the trip as members of the world’s elite racquetball player community. Additionally, Dave Ellis, Team Coach, and Brent Huff, Team Trainer, will be part of the U.S. delegation.
The World Games, including 4,000 athletes from more than 90 countries competing in 31 sports, will take place July 25-August 4. Occurring every four years, this is the first time the World Games will be held in South America. Racquetball was one of the charter members of the World Games that first took place in Santa Clara, Calif. in 1981.
Racquetball at the World Games features a single elimination format for the top 16 men and 16 women representing 13 countries who qualified through their individual singles finishes at the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships last August in the Dominican Republic. The World Games racquetball competition will take place July 26-28 at Club Cañasgordas Comfenalco Valle in Cali. Medals will be awarded to the top three places at the awards ceremony on July 28.
Rocky Carson, Ladera Ranch, CA, the top-ranked U.S. male player, ranks 2nd on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and placed first at the IRF World Championships in Santo Domingo last August.
Cheryl Gudinas, Naperville, IL, has qualified for the U.S. Team 21 consecutive years. She is ranked 5th on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) and 2nd in U.S. LPRT rankings. Gudinas placed third at the IRF World Championships last year.
Rhonda Rajsich, Fountain Hills, AZ, ranks 2nd on the LPRT, 1st in the U.S., and placed fourth last year in Santo Domingo.
Jose Rojas, Stockton, CA, stands at 4th on the IRT, 2nd in U.S. IRT rankings, and third in Santo Domingo last August. This is his first trip to the World Games.
“We are proud of these four athletes who will be representing the United States next week at the World Games,” said U.S. Team Coach Dave Ellis. “We offer best wishes and good luck to all of the other delegations. Off the court, we value the international friendships we have made over the years. During the competition, our players will leave everything they have on the court in representing our country.”
“The IRF Board of Directors and tournament staff congratulate and welcome the U.S. delegation to Cali for the World Games,” said IRF President Osvaldo Maggi. “We wish them luck and a great experience representing their country on the World stage.”
