Suzanne Stettinius (Parkton, Md.) took the silver medal in the NORCECA Open behind Donna Vakalis of Canada. Teams from 11 nations participated in the Olympic qualifying event held in Guatemala City, Guatemala, March 31-April 1. A strong combined score secured Stettinius her place on the podium. Team USA members Samantha Achterberg (Littleton, Colo.), Rendy Opdycke (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Mickey Kelly (Colorado Springs, Colo.) provided outstanding performances in the five disciplines. Exceptional results were Opdycke's 2:12 swim, Kelly's strong run and Achterberg's overall fourth-place finish.

In the men's division, Sam Sacksen (Somerset, Pa.) and Will Brady (Howell, Mich.) once again showed they are the men to beat in the combined event with 1-2 finishes far ahead of the field. Sacksen's extraordinary winning combined score moved him from 13th position to fourth place, only four points (or one second) behind third place and 11 seconds behind second place. 2008 Olympian Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo.), recovering from illness, had a strong performance across the five disciplines, while 18-year-old Lucas Schrimsher (Roswell, N.M.) turned in a superb five events to show that he is the face of the future for the men's program.
