At the 2012 UIPM Congress, one of UIPM's most liked servents, and former Treasurer Gyula Bretz was awarded UIPM's highest honour: UIPM Honorary Member for Life.

Between 1955 and 1966 Mr Bretz was an active Modern Pentathlon athlete, from 1960 he was member of the Hungarian national team. I participated in many international competitions, but he had no chance to participate in World Championships or Olympic Games, given the "gold team" at that time (Balczó, Török, Móna).

His strong side was riding and fencing. He achieved his best riding result in 1961 at the Budapest international competition, where with 1360 points necessitating a speed of 630 m/minute he won the gold medal.  At the end of his career, he won the 4th place at the 1965 London Championships which was the highlight of his career.

Mr Bretz was an athlete in MAFC, the  Budapest Technical University Club, and he is the President of the Modern Pentathlon section of MAFC since ten years. Since 2010 he is the President of the entire Club. Mr Bretz is also the President of the Supervisory Committee of the Hungarian Modern Pentathlon Association. At UIPM, he worked as Honorary Auditor for 2 cycles (1992-2000), and for 3 cycles as Treasurer.
