Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.) appears to have fully recovered from a broken wrist suffered earlier this year as she finished with the top four in her group of 37 during Thursday's women's qualification round at the Modern Pentathlon Senior World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Isaksen, 19, advances to Saturday's women's final. The top 18 women from both semi-final groups on Thursday earned a berth in the final.
Isaksen started the day strong by winning 24 of her fencing bouts which placed her 4th in the competition. She followed that up with a strong 10th place in the swim (2:18.40) and finished the day 17th in the combined run/shoot (12:13.00). Her total of 4184 points is the same as the top three women in her group; Anastasiya Prokopenko of Belarus, Adrienn Toth of Hungary, and Elodie Clouvel of France.
“This is the first time I have not been sick or injured all year," Isaksen said. "I am feeling very fit and this strong display gives me a lot of confidence for Saturday’s final where I want to medal.”
American Suzanne Stettinius (Parkton, Md.) narrowly missed qualifying for the final. In a season plagued by injury, including a broken collarbone, Stettinius nonetheless missed the final by only two places. Other U.S. athletes falling shy of the final included Samantha Achterberg (Littleton, Colo.) and Rendy Lynn Opdycke (Mercer Island, Wash.). For complete results go to www.pentathlon.org.
Competition continues on Friday with the men's qualification round. Americans Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas), Will Brady (Howell, Mich.), Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo.) and Sam Sacksen (Somerset, Pa.) will vie qualify for the men's final on Sunday.
The UIPM will broadcast the finals days live on Pentathlon TV at www.pentathlon.org Sept. 10 & 11. The broadcast will feature highlights of the fencing and swimming events as well as live coverage of the riding and combined event.
