Youth and Junior Pentathletes gathered on April 30 for the first of four Regional Series events to be held for Juniors and Youth in cities around the nation. USA Pentathlon, in a move to bring the sport to more cities around the nation, held the first competition at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Brendan Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) bested
Ben Wiggins (Laurel, Miss.) and
Cory Cranford (Morrison, Colo.) in the boys youth division, and also took home the junior boys division title. In the Junior Women's division,
Samantha Achterberg (Littleton, Colo.) took first place followed by
McKenzie West (Sedalia, Colo.) and
Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.).
Katie Penrose won the Youth Girls division followed by
Nicole Bloom and
Emily Oliver.
It was a great start to a new program designed to grow the sport of Modern Pentathlon. Young rookies mixed with established veterans at the Olympic Training Center. The riding event, held at M&M stables in Fountain, Colo., provided an exciting finish to a day of new experiences for many of the athletes. We'll see most of these athletes again at the OTC as all participating athletes qualified for the U.S. Youth and Junior Nationals to be held this summer at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
